My first job after my engineering degree had nothing to do with engineering. Fresh out of engineering, I jumped into the field of event management. It was fun to start with.

It was the year 2003. Marketing back then was a whole lot different. Mobile phones had just made inroads into the Indian market. I was just transitioning from a pager. Facebook and LinkedIn did not exist. A lot of marketing activities that I did was physical running around, meeting clients at their offices, noting down my daily check list from yellow pages, a lot of cold calls, bidding for a tiny space in newspaper ads, handing out flyers in public places and the like.

A lot has changed in the last 18 years. I had to update myself constantly and upgrade myself to the trends in the online world. These days I see youngsters with just two years experience having more skill and understanding of the marketing space. The reason I state this here is, even if you have two decades of experience, it is of less or no use if you are not updated with the latest tools available in the market. If you are a CMO of an organisation, you can very well learn a lot from the fresh breed of marketers who have a good grasp of the latest tools and techniques in the marketing world. Many of them are T shaped marketers and that is a great skill to have these days.
